Solar Thermal Evacuated Tubes have become a popular choice for water heating throughout the Uk and Europe. Evacuated-tube solar collectors feature parallel rows of transparent glass tubes. Each tube contains a glass outer tube and metal absorber tube attached to a fin. The fin's coating absorbs solar energy but inhibits radiative heat loss. These collectors are used for both domestic and commercial applications.
As with all technologies there are pros and cons between models and types.
1. European manufactured solar tubes system includes a patented Low E glass technology. This uses a special low iron glass formula which has reduced the reflective properties, increasing the absorption properties.
2. The glass surface has 360 deg absorption ability, which give better performance than all other flat solar panel technologies, giving a more even output throughout the day.
3. Efficiency. Each solar tube has a twin-skin vacuum filled glazing for better heat retention. Just like a thermos flask, once the heat is in it becomes trapped recovering the heat 'lost' by other solar panels technologies.
In most cases we will recommend using evacuated tubes over flat plate collectors unless price or aesthetics are the most important factors when specifying a system.
